The Digital Edition is the PS5 without a disc drive – available as the original model and as the Slim. Here you can compare new and used offers side by side.
Digital Edition: original or Slim?
The first Digital Edition from 2020 is a full PS5 without a disc drive and with an 825 GB SSD. A drive cannot be added to it. The Slim Digital Edition is more compact, and you can buy the official detachable drive for it. Depending on the production year and region, the Slim Digital has 1 TB or 825 GB – the exact figure is in the listing.
There is no difference in gaming performance between the digital and the disc version. All PS5 games are also available as downloads.
When the Digital Edition is worth it
The Digital Edition is right for you if you buy your games from the PlayStation Store anyway or play a lot through a PS Plus subscription. Bear in mind that downloaded games are tied to your account and cannot be resold. Used discs, which are often cheap to find, cannot be used without a drive.
- For digital: usually cheaper to buy, no swapping discs
- Against digital: no resale, no used discs, no Blu-rays
- Big games need a fast internet connection
Buying used: check the account and condition
With used digital consoles, the account question is especially important: the previous owner should have signed out and reset the console to factory settings. Games the previous owner bought do not belong to the console. Also check the condition of the controller, the fan noise and the receipt. From a commercial seller you get a statutory warranty, often one year for used goods.
Comparing prices pays off twice
With the Digital Edition, the overall cost is often decided after the purchase: games in the Store frequently cost full price at launch, while discs drop in price faster. Sales in the PlayStation Store and the PS Plus catalogues partly make up for this. So think about how you play before you buy. If you are unsure, a Slim Digital is a flexible choice because you can buy the drive later. Our price history shows you whether an offer is currently on the cheap or expensive side, so you avoid buying at the wrong moment.
