The Xbox Series X is Microsoft's most powerful console. Here you can compare new and used offers – without standalone controllers, storage cards or games.
The Series X variants
The Xbox Series X was released in November 2020 with a 1 TB SSD and a 4K Blu-ray drive. Later, a white Digital Edition without a drive and a model with 2 TB of storage were added. The variants do not differ in performance – the console is designed for 4K gaming at up to 120 frames per second in supported titles.
You expand storage with special expansion cards for the slot at the back. Older Xbox One games can also be launched from a normal USB hard drive.
Game Pass and backward compatibility
Many players use the Xbox mainly with the Game Pass subscription, which gives access to a rotating catalogue of games. In addition, a great many Xbox One games and selected titles from the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox run on it. That makes a used console attractive if you already have a game collection.
- Series X: the most powerful Xbox, disc drive on the standard model
- Series S: smaller, cheaper, no disc drive – has its own page
- Xbox One controllers also work with the Series X
What to look for when buying used
Ask whether the console has been unlinked from the previous owner's Microsoft account and reset. Ask for a demonstration of the disc drive, listen for an even fan noise and check the controller sticks for drift. Conspicuously cheap offers for consoles described as new are a warning sign – which is why we hide very low prices.
Series X or PS5?
Technically, the Xbox Series X and the PS5 are close. The decision usually comes down to games and habits: on Xbox, Game Pass and extensive backward compatibility take centre stage, although many Microsoft games now also come out on other platforms. The PS5 scores with Sony's exclusives. Where your friends play matters too: not every game supports cross-platform play. If you already own Xbox One games and controllers, the Series X is the natural successor. Incidentally, you can keep using an Xbox One controller with the Series X without any problems, which noticeably lowers the cost for a second player.
