The Xbox Series S is the compact, affordable Xbox without a disc drive. Here you will find new and used offers with 512 GB or 1 TB of storage.

What the Series S can do

The Series S launched alongside the Series X in November 2020. It plays the same current Xbox games but is designed for lower resolutions – typically up to 1440p instead of 4K. In return it is very small, quiet and energy-efficient. It has no disc drive; games come via download or Game Pass.

Originally the Series S came in white with 512 GB. Later a black version with 1 TB was added. With big games in particular, the 512 GB version fills up quickly.

Who is the Series S enough for?

The Series S is a good fit if you play on a Full HD or 1440p screen, want a second console for a child's room or mainly use Game Pass. If you have a large 4K TV or want to buy games on disc, you are better off with the Series X.

  • Good for: beginners, Game Pass, small screens, a second console
  • Less good for: 4K TVs, disc collections
  • Plan your storage: 1 TB or an expansion card if you play many big games

Buying a used Series S

Used Series S consoles are often cheap to find. Make sure a controller is included – some offers come without one. Check the condition of the sticks, ask to see the console boot and download updates, and ask whether it has been reset to factory settings. With shops, a statutory warranty applies to used goods too, often one year.

Budgeting realistically for running costs

Because the Series S has no disc drive, you buy games digitally or play via Game Pass. The subscription is convenient but creates ongoing costs. Many games also require a suitable subscription for online multiplayer. Also budget for a storage expansion if you want several big games installed at the same time. A second controller is worth it for playing together. With these items in mind, you can compare honestly whether the Series S or a used Series X suits your budget better.
