The PS5 Slim is the current standard PS5: smaller, lighter and with more storage. Here you can compare new and used offers for both versions.
What has changed compared with the first PS5
The Slim arrived at the end of 2023 and replaced the original PS5 in the shops. It is around a third smaller and considerably lighter. The SSD usually holds 1 TB instead of 825 GB, although some later digital revisions are back to 825 GB. At the front there are two USB-C ports instead of one USB-C and one USB-A.
Gaming performance stays the same. There is hardly any reason to switch from a working old PS5 – but for new buyers the Slim is the obvious choice.
Disc or digital – and the detachable drive
The Slim is available with a disc drive and as a Digital Edition. On the Slim, the drive is a removable module, so you can upgrade the digital version later with the separately available drive. Work out whether digital plus the drive costs more than the disc version straight away – usually the disc version is then the better choice.
- Stand: not every Slim package includes a stand for vertical placement
- Model numbers: CFI-20xx stands for the Slim
- Storage expandable via M.2 SSD or USB hard drive
Tips for buying used
Used Slim consoles are young and often still in good condition. Ask to see the proof of purchase, check the serial number and contents, and ask about the condition of the controller sticks. With disc versions, a test of the drive is part of the deal. On marketplaces, the platform's buyer-protection payment methods protect you.
Who the Slim is the right choice for
For most players the Slim is the most sensible PS5: it plays all PS5 games, takes up less space in the TV unit and usually offers more storage than the original model. The PS5 Pro is only worth it if you have a high-end 4K TV and want maximum graphics. If you already own an old PS5, there is no need to switch. A used, well-kept Slim with a receipt is often a good compromise between price and remaining warranty. When buying used, also ask whether the manufacturer's warranty is still valid and whether the proof of purchase will be handed over.
