Console with a game – bundles compared

Official bundles are put together by the manufacturer, for example a console with an included game or a download code. They are new and often cheaper than buying the items separately. Private or commercial sets usually consist of a used console and several games, sometimes with extra controllers or cases.

With download codes, the rule is: the code must not have been redeemed. With used bundles, always ask whether codes are still valid or have already been used.

A package is only a good deal if you really want to play the games it includes. Compare the package price with the price of the console alone – the difference is what you are paying for the games. Used games on disc or cartridge have a resale value; download codes do not.

Large sets look tempting but are harder to check. Ask for a list of all games and accessories and look for photos of the actual items. With Nintendo consoles there should be no hint of modified software. Shops in Germany must provide a statutory warranty on used goods too, usually at least one year.

There are especially many sets for the Nintendo Switch: consoles with Mario Kart, Pokémon, Animal Crossing or Smash Bros are classics because these games stay in demand for a long time. For the PS5 you will often find official bundles with an included game or a download code, and for the Xbox packages with sports games or shooters. Games on cartridge or disc retain a resale value – which makes used sets with physical games interesting if you want to sell individual titles later. Also make sure all the games match the console – for example Switch cartridges for the Switch and PS5 discs for a console with a disc drive.
